We were appointed to carry out the full internal refurbishment of this Grade 1 listed hotel, including its 211 bedrooms, front of house areas, stairs, bar & restaurant, leisure club with gym and meeting facilities.
The works were split into several continuous phases, one floor at a time, where the rooms were taken offline and meant our team worked long hours, 7 days a week to meet the clients and their customers’ demands.
All areas underwent extensive preparation prior to the application of paints and vinyl bespoke wallcoverings. This included the preparation of walls using vacuum-controlled sanders to remove previous products then them being sealed using stabilising primer. We then identified areas requiring filling and some walls required restabilising.
We applied products from Dulux, Zinsser and Crown by airless spray, brush and roller to achieve perfect finishes on ceilings, walls, ornate cornices and woodwork as well as the preparation and painting of internal escapes stairs which involved the use of specialist access equipment due to the areas being up to 30 metres high ! As well as this, we applied epoxy floor coatings to escape stairwells and basement areas including safety demarcation and painted the metal balustrades.
This conversion of the Carlton Hotel to a Hilton was particularly challenging as the hotel remained open throughout the project, which included the busy Edinburgh Fringe Festival season and, due to the demands of the contractor, saw us use a team of up to 25 decorators at peak times.
